The pinnacle of his junior career came in 2009 when he dominated the GP2 Series, securing the championship in his debut season. Hülkenberg made his Formula One debut in 2010 with Williams, immediately making his mark by securing the team's first pole position in over five years. Despite this impressive achievement, Williams chose not to retain him for the following season.

After his Williams stint, he joined Force India as a test and reserve driver in 2011, using the opportunity to develop his skills and understanding of Formula One machinery. His dedication paid off when he was promoted to a full race seat for the 2012 season, partnering Paul di Resta.

The 2013 season saw Hülkenberg move to Sauber, where he raced alongside Mexican driver Esteban Gutiérrez. His performances caught the attention of his former team, leading to his return to Force India for the 2014 season.

Currently, Hülkenberg is contracted to compete in Formula One for Sauber, continuing his journey in the sport's premier category.
